GCI Wellness Challenge
As we head into colder months in Alaska, it’s important to remember to take care of ourselves and our mental wellness. GCI is here to help! Join our effort to help build healthier communities by joining the GCI Wellness Challenge. Through this virtual challenge, participants will help raise awareness about mental health issues be reminded to take care of themselves.
Now that social distancing has become part of our lives, GCI wants to make sure Alaskans are supported, connected, and staying healthy. It’s an important effort, as Alaska’s suicide rate is more than twice the national average. The rate is even higher in rural Alaska.
The GCI Suicide Prevention Fund supports organizations across Alaska to reduce rates of suicide and promote mental wellness and strengthened communities. Every year, GCI contributes $100,000 to nonprofits to support their work on prevention and mental health awareness. This year, we’re also adding a new way to encourage connections. The GCI Wellness Challenge will raise awareness about managing your mental health and taking care of ourselves and each other.
Participants are challenged to complete a 5K run or walk, and participate in wellness activities. Everyone who completes the run and the following challenges will be entered to win a tech prize from GCI.
- Check in with a friend by video or phone call (no texting) to see how they’re doing. Let them know how you’re doing.
- Cook a healthy meal for yourself and/or your family.
- Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself to one self-care activity for a minimum of 30 minutes. Just because.
